Anglian Water’s @one Alliance complete £5m+ storm water storage and equipment upgrade at Whaddon WRC

Anglian Water’s @one Alliance has recently completed their investment project in Whaddon, by building additional storm water storage and upgrading equipment at their water recycling centre (WRC) off Kennel Lane.

ANGLIAN WATER WHADDON WRC UPGRADE PROJECT 2

Over £5.2 million was invested to complete the upgrades at the WRC which will protect the local environment from flooding and pollution.

The project included the installation of a new storm tank which will hold an additional 215,000 litres of water during heavy rainfall – building resilience to the extreme weather caused by climate change.

The site will now be able to hold 510,000 litres of rainwater in total, until it can be fully treated and returned safely to the environment.

The project also included the installation of specialist equipment which to strengthen the water recycling process by removing phosphorous from wastewater, improving the river water quality nearby.

Phosphorous is widely used in soaps and cleaning products, which can be harmful to wildlife when it reaches rivers and other watercourses. The new equipment will help remove harmful algae growth and improve water quality in local watercourse – such as the Calverton Brook.

Gary Freeman, Project Manager said:

“As a result of climate change, we’re seeing more bouts of extreme weather, sudden downpours and rising sea levels – so it’s important that our sites are prepared to process higher volumes of stormwater, especially as we expect to enter a wet winter this year.

“We’re really pleased to have completed this project in Whaddon which will increase our resilience to climate change and ensure the wastewater is being treated to a high standard before it’s returned to the natural environment.”
